He wrote on the diseases of the poor, on masturbation, on the diseases of the men of letters and of rich people, and nervous diseases. Tissot's most famous work in his lifetime was Avis au peuple sur sa sant? (1761), arguably the greatest medical best-seller of the eighteenth century. On 1 April 1787, Napoleon Bonaparte wrote to Dr. Tissot complimenting him for spending his 'days in treating humanity' noting that his 'reputation has reached even into the mountains of Corsica' and describing 'the respect I have for your worksà'. Copy of ARCHIBALD GRANT of Merrymusk, Bart., with his bookplate and inscribed to him top of title page (dated 1765). SIR ARCHIBALD GRANT (1696-1778), 2nd Baronet in his early life was a company speculator and the Member of parliament for Aberdeenshire, 1722-1732. After Grant's expulsion from the Commons for his involvement in the frauds on the Charitable Corporation, he returned to Scotland and devoted his time to improving his Monymusk estate. He supported rural manufactures such as linen. He introduced English agricultural methods, and published two pamphlets: The Farmer's New-Year's Gift (Aberdeen, 1757) and The Practical Farmer's Pocket Companion (Aberdeen, 1766). According to David Hume, planting trees was 'the only laudable thing he has ever done'.
