1847 LARGE FRENCH ATLAS OF COMPARATIVE REPRODUCTION WITH SCARCE HAND COLORED PLATES. 8 x 11 inch hardcover, 438 pages, xv plate descriptions, new hand-marbled paper-covered boards, original red leather spine with raised bands, gilt title and decoration, all edges gilt, 12 pairs of facing plates in duplicate, separated by tissue guards, drawn by Martin Saint-Ange: one set by Acarie Baron, lithographed by Bernard and Frey, the second set stipple engraved by Annedouche, printed by N. Remond, and hand-colored (lithographed Plate XII not bound in this copy--only the color engraving). TEXT IN FRENCH. Light foxing to first several pages and last 3 sets of plates, old water stains to lithographed Plates X and XI (not affecting color engravings X-XII). This remarkable text with atlas illustrates the comparative anatomy of reproductive systems of the barnacle, snake, bird, opossum, human (male and female), and early embryonic development of bird and man. The illustrations are by Gaspard Joseph Martin Saint-Ange (1803-88). In the first state of the first edition (1837), the engravings were not colored. The present second state with hand colored engravings is scarce. The text by Gabriel Grimaud de Caux (1800-c. 1875). The first Part is an overview of reproduction across invertebrates and vertebrates, followed by human reproduction, fetal deveopment, birth, and lactation. The second part comprises hygiene and medicine of human reproduction, including the psychology and physiology of sexuality, aphrodisiacs, masturbation, impotence and sterility. The third part comprises morality and legislation of sexuality. GASPARD JOSEPH MARTIN SAINT-ANGE, (1803-1888) earned his M.D. with a thesis entitled, "Anatomic and physiologic researches on the cranial membranes and spinal cord" (1829), and was a naturalist at the Museum of Natural History in Paris.
